Introduction
Most of my life has been spent in the agricultural industry starting with a family owned turf farm, and then later, working with Brian Minter at Minter Country Gardens. My years in the perennial and nursery departments allowed me to develop my plant knowledge and become familiar with all aspects of plant care and identification.
Brian taught me so much about the use of foliar color and shape in the garden and the need for twelve months of interest. I firmly believes a person should be able to walk through their yard, sit in there picture window, or out on their patio and always love what they see.
I have developed a passion for the newly emerging field of dwarf evergreens. They can anchor a garden with the same effect as their larger cousins but do not require the constant care to keep them in hand. With today’s smaller yards, homeowners no longer have to give up variety. These plants also play a huge role in both strata complexes and commercial sites as green space diminishes but the desire for beauty doesn’t. Propagators have worked diligently come up with alternatives for the smaller yard and each year brings more color, more shapes, more varieties. The nursery industry has come back with phenomenal options. It is an exciting time to be a gardener and designer.
Another shift I have seen is the need for easy care, drought resistant gardens. As our personal time dwindles and access to water diminishes, this has become another front runner in garden concept and design. With the right plant choices a garden can be incredibly beautiful while being easy to care for.
For those customers with established gardens, the priority often shifts to its care. Our job is one of balancing plant care with attention to detail, and efficient use of our time.
I encourage my customers to call when they feel the need. I am never too busy to talk. This is my passion and I am thrilled each day with the new opportunities that come my way.
